The Dark Pool – the mammoth debut full-length from Melbourne outfit Thornhill – is certainly greeting an expectant local scene. After the riotous reception to their 2018 EP Butterfly, the five-piece bunkered down to craft their heavily-anticipated follow up, a task they would take with a staunch approach and a fine-tooth comb. Committed to stretching, moulding and refining their artistry over the last 18 months, Thornhill have emerged with a colourful, refreshing and ultimately breakout heavy effort. “We wanted the album to be the perfect follow up to Butterfly, and yet the perfect way to lead us into our next album in the future,” explains lead vocalist Jacob Charlton. “We wanted it to have enough difference that people would be surprised, but that it would also allow us to keep branching out down the track. We never want to pigeon hole ourselves into a genre, that was never the point of Thornhill. We just want to be exactly who we want to be every single time.”
Before the release of their debut album, Thornhill – completed by guitarists Ethan McCann and Matt Van Duppen, bassist Nick Sjogren and drummer Ben Maida – have consistently commanded the Australian heavy space. With support slots alongside heavyweights including Northlane, Architects, Polaris, Parkway Drive, In Hearts Wake, Beartooth, Make Them Suffer and The Plot In You under their belt, The Dark Pool marks their next assault on the scene.
Further stretching their artistic limbs in the realm of production, The Dark Pool marks an entirely self-produced effort for Thornhill. Bassist Nick Sjogren would helm mixing and mastering at his home studio, while Charlton and guitarist Ethan McCann would be stationed right at the core of the writing process. The trio tread a fine line between packaging everything they desired on the record (see Ethan’s love affair with synths, the group’s fascination with the Stranger Things
franchise, and their curiosity with whispers and weird noises), while still outputting a synergistic release.
Emerging with the flavourful and focused effort The Dark Pool, Thornhill ensure they continue their streak as one of the
country’s most striking young heavy bands of late.
